round two of the ottawa-montreal trip recap... ding ding!

so, i forgot to mention that we visited the literal "big apple" that we always pass by en route to k-town. although everybody else thought it was really ghetto, i was not disappointed by any means - i think it was worth it just to see those signs everywhere warning us about the rabid wild rabbits! :p next time we visit montreal, we *have* to go to the giant orange, ok guys? ... guys?

to finish off the second day's summary: after getting lost trying to find concordia (heh, i *kinda* forgot to write down the directions or address of the residences when i booked the rooms... ooops!), we spent the evening in old montreal. i suppose in rebellion of the previous night's expensive but not-too-impressive meal, we (and by "we", i mean "not me") decided to go cheap and ate at subway in a food court that also offered tattoos and piercings, presumably "while u wait" for your italian bmt to be assembled. but subs aside, it was lovely walking around in the evening, looking at the old architecture and soaking up the old montreal atmosphere. before retiring for the night (and making several pit stops at timmy's for iulia :p), we were treated to a pretty fireworks display that was also hilariously punctuated with the witty remarks/drunken shouts of francophone teenagers... (i really gotta curb that impulse to mock other ppl though)

the next morning, ames and i were rudely awakened by the other various travellers staying at concordia. the cacophony of doors rattling + slamming shut and people talking loudly in the hallways at 7 a.m. were reminders of some of the less pleasant aspects of res life - but hey, atleast at queen's people actually flushed the toilet and washed their hands!!!! what is with those people and their lack of basic hygiene?!?! seriously man, we really should have followed them around with a can of lysol spray in hand...

so our third day of the trip comprised of us doing the normal tourist thing - walk around the downtown area, visit st. joseph's oratory, and climb mont royal. seriously, combined with the fact that we visited parliament buildings in ottawa, i felt like we had turned into our parents - the only major difference being that our pace was waaaaay less hurried. no getting up at the crack of dawn (well, intentionally, anyway) so that we can cram in as much sightseeing time as possible ("we're making great time - it's only 10:30am and we've seen 7 attractions!")... in fact, there wasn't even a set itinerary. it was pretty nice, we knew what we wanted to see and got to it eventually in our own time. highlights of the day: climbing mont royal to see the (dead) beaver lake - though "puddle" might be more accurate; the "colonic irrigation" sign with large intestine drawing on it; discovering that there was a club "super sexe" and seeing the "danse contacte" neon sign complete with cartoon hand groping cartoon butt; medium montreal smoked meat at schwartz's ("i gave schwartz's 63/65, but then changed it to 65/65 upon further review of my notes..."); and, as always, the great company. :) oh, and playing carcassonne while slightly tipsy... :p all i can say is, when i've had some "listerine" to drink, i stop playing competitively completely and am much, much nicer.

slept like a baby that night. :p

we slept in the next day, and headed back home in the late morning. despite a looooong detour in cornwall ("are you sure this is the downtown? it comprises of a mickey d's, kfc, and chinese buffet called 'wing hing'! and NO, we are not going to wing hing!!!"), we made good time getting back to toronto again, getting back in time for a showing of "charlie and the chocolate factory" and steaks afterward. ok, sorry for the anticlimactic ending to this post, but i'm getting a little tired now and i can't think of anything more to say besides: fantastic trip. wonderful people. lotsa laughs. thank you to the 4 others who made this trip to memorable - next year, seattle/vancouver? :)
